From time to time, Amazon tries to improve the shopping experience on its platform. For this, it makes improvements in its product listing types and attributes so that sellers are able to better describe their products. Which in turn, helps customers to make a better buying decision.

Amazon Product Listing, as most of you may already be aware of, is the process of adding a product to Amazon for selling purpose. These listings are the basis of entire selling process. Doing it correctly helps boost the organic visibility of the product on Amazon while errors can hurt your sales.

Thus it is important to stay updated about the various changes that Amazon brings about in the listing templates. Purpose of this post, is to help consolidate all such Amazon Product Listing changes for you at one place.

What is Product Type?

When you create a listing, the first step is to select the product type.

Product Type is basically the term given to a set of products that have certain attributes in common. For example: ‘SHOES’ – this will include all kinds of shoes like sport shoes, leather shoes, sandals, slippers, Golf Shoes……”

What are Product Attributes?

The features or specific details about the exact product you are listing are referred to as the Attributes. Example: In case of a shoes, some of the attributes could be Shoe Size, Gender, Size System, Age Range etc..

Amazon provides predefined fields/attributes where you can enter the relevant details about your product. Some of these attributes are mandatory as they are essential for a customer to be able to make a decision like shoe size, while a lot of them are optional.

I always advice my clients to make the best use of these optional attributes. They can give a much needed boost to your listings. More the information a customer has, easier it is for them to decide.

Most Recent Changes in Amazon Product Listing Templates (24 Dec 2020)

Amazon recently announced new Product Types and attributes to improve the listing detail pages on 24 Dec 2020.

Exact list of new Product Types has not been released. However, when you use the add a Product tool, you will now see new product types to list your products in.

Attributes Changes in Amazon Product Listing Templates

Apart from new product types, Amazon has made some existing attributes mandatory and also introduced new attributes in some of the categories.

New attributes are optional as of now for the next 60 days but will become mandatory after that. So, I would advise you yo start making the changes in your listings accordingly.

Country of Origin Update & Other Changes – 16 July 2020

Amazon has launched 2 new product types and new optional attributes for 11 existing product types in its most recent update. Also a mandatory attribute – country of origin – will be applicable from 21 July 2020

1. Country Of Origin – Mandatory Attribute

Starting 21 July 2020, Amazon is introducing a new mandatory attribute for all products – ‘Country of Origin’.

You are required to update the country of origin for new as well as your existing listings on Amazon.

Failing to update the information regarding country of origin for all your product listings on Amazon by 10 August 2020 can result in suspension of your listings by Amazon.

2. New Product Types Launched

Amazon has launched 2 new product types on 16 July 2020 in 13 Amazon Marketplaces: US, UK, DE, FR, IT, ES, CA, MX, AE, IN, BR, AU, TR

3. New Optional Attributes Introduced to Existing Product Types

New optional attributes have been added to 11 existing product types in 14 Amazon Marketplaces: US, UK, DE, FR, IT, ES, JP, CA, MX, AE, IN, BR, AU, TR

  3. PANTS
  4. HAT
  5. SWIMWEAR
  6. SHORTS
  7. WRITING_INSTRUMENTS

Product Listing Template Update: Furniture, Toys & Games – 15th Sep 2019

In order to improve the catalog quality, the Amazon Product Listing Template for ‘Furniture’ and ‘Toys & Games’ categories have been updated with effect from 15th September 2019.

In this revision, a few attributes have been modified from ‘optional’ to ‘required’. Further, a new set of attributes have also been added to ensure that the catalog is at par with the current industry trends and helps customers understand the product better.

This change will only affect new selections. No action is required for the existing selections.
